Natural capital as an economic concept can be traced back to the writings of revolutionary thinker and economist Adam Smith in the 1700s.
At the start of the 20th century, it was identified by Alvin S. Johnson as the origin of “productive wealth” as well as the vital source of industrial development.
Governments, businesses and economists worldwide are increasingly promoting natural capital as our most valuable asset, as a means of ensuring long-term economic, environmental and societal resilience.
Natural capital is also recognised as an integral part of ESG strategies for businesses, helping to reduce risks, improve reputations and open up wider opportunities for investment.
In this event, we will understand the value of natural capital on our doorstep, presented by the Hull and East Yorkshire Local Nature Partnership and the University of Hull.
There will also be an opportunity to view local examples of natural capital as part of a walking tour of the Blue-Green Lab, demonstrating how local businesses and communities can thrive in the long-term using blue-green infrastructure.
